Hey everybody!
I just wanted to let you know that you shouldn't be too disappointed in me if you aren't seeing as many pics as you'd like to over the next few months - I think swot weeks, exams and holidays are going to be declared downtime for me and my camera...
...but feel free to add any at any time you have a cool pic to share.
Love,
Kayla
Pictures from in and around Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. From random pictures to photos of fun stuff going on, from silly students to serious visitors. Every day. Hey!

On Friday night at Slipstream there was one wild Halloween party! There were many zombies, for some reason, and a cheerleader, a pirate, Wednesday Addams, a lawyer for the mafia, Anna Wintour, a 1920s pin-up girl and a lot of under-covers who didn't know we were celebrating Halloween this early.

The twins of John Kotze House are two lovely white cats who - while they don't really like us humans - love each other very much and can always be seen snuggling up.
Yeah, yeah. I love cats.

It's a rainy day in Grahamstown today, and to bring in current affairs, it's also environmental week. Here's a malfunctioning storm drain coupled with a students idea of conserving water. (Gregory Peake) |
Winter is a not so distant memory today, with temperatures of 12 degrees at noon. Here's a memory of the real winter, back when everything was dead and barren and baring your skin was an invitation for disease and infection. (Gregory Peake) |

Kink, a cozy little clothing shop behind Reddits Book & Coffee Shop on New Street, sells awesome second-hand and vintage clothing as well as some amazing designs by Nene and Gunga. They had a half-price sale on Wednesday night, with some wine... Wine!

An awesome picture of Thomas and his beautiful didgeridoo at a lovely Friday afternoon DrumSoc gathering. They are every Friday at 16h00, if you are interested in chilling in the Botanical Gardens and playing some drums while the sun sets, ushering the new weekend in...

Monday evening's "No Fur Streak" was a huge success - despite the cold - and saw tons of Rhodents running naked, semi-naked or simply naked in spirit through the streets. The streak, which was part of ROAR's Animal Rights Week, was a protest against fur clothing and accessories - the streakers claiming that they'd "rather go naked than wear fur". They wrapped it up at Cougar Monday at Pirates (some still donning - or not donning - their protest gear). Check out the rest of the week's activities and events here.
Excuse the tag on the bottom corner of that picture - trying out a few picture effects websites, not finding any awesome ones just yet...

Looking decidedly out of place amongst the fluorescent skulls in the background of Slipstream's Stage, Duncan Park gets the crowd ready for Margaret's Daughter. |
Folklore entertaining the crowd at Saturday's Acoustic gig. Joel (right) and Duncan (left) team up for some joint strumming and singing. |

19 March 2010 - Human Rights Week
A photo from Human Rights Week in March. One of the posters up on the wall of our dearly missed Old Gaol. The week ended with a party hosted at the gaol by Amnesty International Soc. A fun, poetry reading, music making, expression filled night at Rhodes. And a great way to start off our first term here! I leave with what the poster says :)

Hey everybody! As any of you who follow my personal blog know, I love charity shopping. The Sunflower Hospice Shop in Grahamstown is a beautiful little shop situated at 67 Bathurst Street - and right in my heart. All proceeds from shopping there go to patients of the Grahamstown Hospice. Shopping there makes me happy for not only the most obvious reason - Oh my god, I love these clothes! - but also because the money I spend there goes to a good cause. Find anything from books to curtains, from evening gowns to suspenders, from pots and pans to jewelery, at this quaint little store. They even had a beautiful vintage fashion show last year!
I know these first few pictures have been taking quite the cause-slant, and I would like to reiterate my invitation to anyone with some nice photos and cool ideas to come on board as authors of this blog, or merely once-off contributors.

A beautiful tabby cat sitting outside Guy Butler House, Nelson Mandela Hall. Click here for a blog about stray animals in the Grahamstown community by Lynne Avis and see if you can make a difference. There are lots of things you can do, such as get involved at the Grahamstown SPCA with your friends or your student society. Contact them at spca@geenet.co.za or (046) 622 3233.
